Meet the Heart Behind AVASA Crafts: Sarah’s Journey with Assistance Dogs and Embroidery

Welcome to AVASA Crafts! I’m Sarah, the person behind AVASA, a business rooted in passion, creativity, and purpose. My husband Tharrow and I have a love for adventure, and spent several years as nomads exploring Australia with our trusty caravan and Landcruiser. Though originally from South Australia, we settled in Queensland in 2020 when our three beautiful granddaughters came to live with us. Now, with the relaunch of AVASA Crafts, I’m excited to bring unique, high-quality items that cater to both dog lovers and those with all types of assistance animals.

My Connection to Assistance Dogs

In 2014, a serious illness changed my life, leaving me unable to work or fully care for myself. Tharrow became my full-time carer, and our dream of traveling seemed out of reach. A friend suggested that an Assistance Dog could help, and after researching, I realized an Assistance Dog might bring me the support and independence I needed. In 2016, I met Crosby, my first Assistance Dog, and everything changed. With Crosby by my side, we were able to travel and pursue the adventures we had once thought impossible.

The Birth of AVASA Crafts’ Embroidery for Assistance Dogs

When Crosby came into my life, I noticed that quality Assistance Dog patches were hard to find in Australia. Most available patches were imported from the USA, labelled “Service Dog” instead of “Assistance Dog,” and the shipping costs were significant. Then, my friend Trisha gave me her unused Brother Galaxie 3000 embroidery machine, which I lovingly call “Miss Galaxie.” I started experimenting, creating basic patches for Crosby, and quickly developed a passion for embroidery.

After sharing some of Crosby’s patches on social media, I began receiving requests from other Assistance Dog handlers. Over time, word spread, and I started creating custom patches for many handlers across Australia. Through AVASA Crafts, I’ve proudly supported several non-profits dedicated to training Assistance Dogs, including Hearts for Heroes, Defence Community Dogs, Heroes on the Homefront, and Australian drought relief organizations. This journey has allowed me to give back to the Assistance Dog community that has given me so much.

The Growth of AVASA Crafts and Our Return

In 2017, I opened an Etsy shop offering a small range of Assistance Dog patches. The response was overwhelming, and the business quickly grew to include hundreds of custom-designed patches for various themes and occasions—from Veteran’s Day to Easter and even Disney-inspired patches. AVASA Crafts grew into a beloved provider of unique, hand-crafted patches and custom items, but in 2020, I decided to pause to focus on family.

Now, with renewed energy, a new industrial embroidery machine, and the addition of sublimation printing and laser cutting and engraving, AVASA Crafts is back and better than ever! I’m excited to bring pre-made, ready-to-ship patches, personalized leash sleeves, and an expanded line of gifts and accessories.
